The bakery in the small medieval town of Sempach in Switzerland fills a gap between two historical buildings. In contrast to its neighbours, the bakery has a striking and modern appearance with a unique façade made using a combination of sliding glass windows and wooden louvres. When closed, the louvres function as a hard outer shell; when open, the building is light and transparent.
Architect: Rigert and Bisang Architekten
Solutions provided by Colt:
• Unusual and unique aesthetics
• Contrast between wood and glass
• Durability
The 4cm wide, five-layer wood-glue panels of the louvres are made from weatherproofed fir and spruce.
By using this combination of woods, there is less risk of louvres deforming. Each floor of the building can move its louvres independently, using electric motors, concealed within the ceiling.
