BRE Building 16, near Watford, was the first “Energy Efficient Office of the Future.” Colt’s moveable glass louvres helped to meet a key objective, minimising the use of artificial light.

Architect: Feilden Clegg Design

Solutions provided by Colt:
• Reduced energy bills
• Minimised solar gain
• Reduced glare
• Striking architectural aesthetic

This building was designed to meet future energy and environmental targets, and needed to actively exploit natural daylight. Moveable glass louvres on the building’s southern façade not only control solar gain but also control glare, disinclining occupants to pull down the blinds and switch on the lights.

The louvres afford a view outside, keeping occupiers in touch with the external environment, and are one of the building’s most striking architectural features.
